of developing the International Codes. The following codes are produced by ICC: International Building Code (IBC),
International Residential Code (IRC), International Existing Building Code (IEBC), International Plumbing Code (IPC), the International Private Sewage Disposal Code (IPSDC), the International Mechanical Code (IMC), the International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC), the International Fire Code (IFC), International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), the International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC), the ICC Electrical Code
(based on the NEC), the International
Property Maintenance Code (IPMC), and the International Zoning Code (IZC).
Many standards including NFPA's National Electrical Code are available from
ICC.
NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code is the model code produced by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
There are six primary model code documents adopted by governmental units.
BOCA National Codes
The codes are updated periodically. In 2003, the BOCA, SBCCI, and ICBO model code organizations merged into one organization called the International Code Council (ICC). However, the BOCA, SBCCI, and ICBO codes are still enforced in only a few jurisdictions. To purchase these codes or for more information on the ICC codes go to: www.iccsafe.org The ICC organization consolidates the annual code changes every three years into one document. Although the model code organization make annual code changes and a supplement for these changes, most governmental agencies adopt the three year version. Within time, the older model code versions will gradually be replaced by the International Codes as these codes are adopted into the various state and local governmental units. The NFPA 5000 code is also available for adoption by various jurisdictions. However, the 5000 code is rarely enforced.
The Life Safety Code is not a building code, but deals with fire safety only and is adopted sporadically by different governmental units.
