NIST laboratories work with industry and government to advance measurement, science, and develop standards. The model code organizations look to this federal government organization for research and studies of building materials and construction for model code requirements.
Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA)
This organization establishes emergency assistance and planning to communities. FEMA advises on building codes, provides flood and plan management, and equip community emergency preparedness and disaster relief to name a few of its service as it relates to disasters. FEMA mission is stated as: “To reduce loss of life and property and protect our nation's critical infrastructure from all types of hazards through a comprehensive, risk-based, emergency management program of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.”
